Historic Site of Nder (Senegal)

Weather…

The historic site of Nder, located in the former Kingdom of Waalo in northern Senegal, stands as a powerful symbol of female resistance against slavery. The site is famous for the tragic event of March 7, 1820, known as "Talaata-i-Nder" (Tuesday of Nder). While the men of the village were away, the women faced an imminent attack by Moorish slave raiders. Led by the Linguere Fatim Yamar Khouriyaye, the women chose collective self-sacrifice, setting fire to their hut to perish together rather than be captured and enslaved. This heroic act prevented the enslavement of the Waalo nobility and secured their place in national history. Today, the memorial at Nder serves as a vital reminder of Senegalese courage and the historical struggle for human dignity and independence.
