Diawling National Park

Diawling National Park is a lesser-known spot in the far southwest of Mauritania, right on the border with Senegal. It was created to protect the fragile ecosystem of the Senegal River Delta, which was threatened by dams and climate change. Today, the park is a thriving wetland where mangroves, lagoons, and salt marshes alternate, providing a well-suited habitat for thousands of waterbirds. Visitors can observe flamingos, pelicans, and numerous rare migratory birds at close range. A boat tour through the enchanting channels is the best way to experience the serenity and beauty of this landscape. In addition to birdwatching, the park provides insights into sustainable fishing and the crafts of local communities, who are closely connected to the delta's resources. Getting here is mostly done via the town of Rosso or from Saint-Louis in Senegal. A 4x4 vehicle is essential for exploring the park. The best time to visit is the cool dry season from November to March when the bird population is at its peak.
