Gueumbeul Reserve (Senegal)

Weather…

The Gueumbeul Special Fauna Reserve, located approximately 12 kilometers south of Saint-Louis, is a vital sanctuary for endangered species in Senegal. Established in 1983, the reserve covers an area of 720 hectares and is characterized by its semi-desert landscape and brackish water lagoons. It has gained international recognition for its successful species reintroduction programs, most notably for the Scimitar-horned Oryx (Oryx dammah), which was previously extinct in the wild. In addition to the oryx, Gueumbeul provides a habitat for Mhorr gazelles, African spurred tortoises, and over 150 species of birds. The reserve plays a strategic role as a stopover point for migratory birds traveling between Europe and Africa. The flora predominantly consists of acacias and halophytic plants adapted to the high soil salinity. Scientists utilize Gueumbeul as an open-air laboratory for ecological studies and biodiversity monitoring within the Sahel region. For visitors, the reserve provides guided tours designed to raise awareness about environmental conservation efforts in Senegal.
