Touba is the spiritual heart of the Mouride brotherhood in Senegal and serves as a unique autonomous religious city. It was founded in 1887 by Cheikh Amadou Bamba, a Sufi saint who envisioned the city as a sanctuary for prayer and peaceful labor. The centerpiece of the city is the Great Mosque of Touba, an architectural marvel featuring five minarets, including the famous 87-meter central tower known as Lamp Fall. As an autonomous zone, the city is administered by the Caliph-General of the Mourides, and national police are generally absent, with internal order maintained by the community. Strict religious laws apply throughout the city, prohibiting the use of alcohol, tobacco, and modern entertainment in public spaces. Each year, Touba hosts the Grand Magal, a massive pilgrimage that attracts millions of devotees from across the globe to celebrate the life and exile of Amadou Bamba. Despite its rapid urbanization, the city remains a powerful symbol of African spiritual resistance and Islamic devotion.
