Established in 1975 under the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, the city transformed from a small fishing village into a major center for petrochemicals and oil refining. Yanbu serves as the terminus for the strategic East-West Pipeline, which transports crude oil from fields in the east directly to the Red Sea, facilitating exports and reducing reliance on the Strait of Hormuz. The city features three distinct port facilities: an industrial port, a commercial port, and a fishing port. In addition to the oil industry, it hosts large plants for the production of plastics, fertilizers, and steel. The urban planning of Yanbu emphasizes sustainability and quality of life, featuring extensive residential areas and green corridors. Visiting
The industrial facilities are not open to the public for security reasons. However, the silhouette of the refineries and tanker berths can be seen from the nearby beach or from boats.
Where to view it
A good viewpoint is the coastal road south of Yanbu, from which the vast harbor basins and large oil tankers can be seen. The traditional fishing port also features an interesting contrast.
