Originally settled by refugees from Makri in Asia Minor, it blends rich history with a modern holiday vibe. An important landmark is the Monastery of Saint Ephraim, a significant pilgrimage site. Nea Makri is also just a short drive from the historical site of Marathon. Getting there from Athens is easy, with regular bus services that take about an hour. The summer months are the most popular time to visit to enjoy the sea and lively atmosphere, but spring and autumn also offer pleasant weather.
