Hegra (Saudi Arabia)

Weather…

Hegra, also known as Mada'in Salih, is the most significant preserved site of the Nabataean civilization south of Petra in Jordan. Located in northwestern Saudi Arabia, this ancient city was once a thriving hub on the incense trade routes connecting the Arabian Sea with the Mediterranean region. Hegra is renowned for its over 100 monumental rock-cut tombs carved into sandstone outcrops between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. Many of these tombs feature intricately decorated facades with Nabataean inscriptions that provide invaluable insights into the society and religion of the era. In 2008, Hegra became the first site in Saudi Arabia to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Beyond the tombs, the archaeological site includes remains of a fortified town, wells, and agricultural systems that demonstrate the Nabataeans' sophisticated water management skills. Today, Hegra serves as the centerpiece of the Al-Ula tourism region and is being extensively developed for cultural visitors.
