Vravrona Wetland (Greece)

Weather…

The Vravrona Wetland is located on the eastern coast of Attica, approximately 35 kilometers from Athens, at the mouth of the Erasinos River. It is one of the most significant coastal ecosystems in the region and is part of the Natura 2000 network. The area encompasses a diverse landscape of marshes, lagoons, reed beds, and olive groves, serving as a vital resting point for numerous migratory birds. Over 220 bird species have been recorded here, making it a hotspot for ornithologists. Beyond its ecological importance, Vravrona is inextricably linked to ancient history, as it hosts the Sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia, one of the most important cult sites of the classical period. The interplay between archaeological remains and the natural environment creates a unique atmosphere. Despite the pressure from nearby urban development, the wetland has remained largely pristine, providing a habitat for endangered species such as the Greek tortoise. An information center and hiking trails allow visitors to learn about the local flora and fauna while exploring the ancient temple ruins.
