Rubavu Family Beach

Rubavu Family Beach, located on the northern shores of Lake Kivu, is Rwanda's premier public beach and a central hub for national recreation. Gisenyi, now known as Rubavu, developed into a popular resort destination as early as the colonial era due to its rare sandy waterfront and nearby thermal springs. The beach is characterized by its shallow, clear waters, which are uniquely safe for swimming as Lake Kivu is free from crocodiles and hippopotamuses. The lake's geological distinction lies in its great depth and the presence of dissolved gases in its lower layers, though this does not impact surface-level leisure activities.
