💡 Tips

  • Visit the lake early in the morning. Not only will you avoid the crowds, but with some luck, you'll witness the mystical mists floating above the water.
  • Swimming in the lake is strictly forbidden to preserve the purity of the water. However, there is a marked path that goes all the way around the lake, taking about 45 minutes.
  • Be bear aware! Do not leave any food in your car or unattended. Throw all trash in the bear-proof bins provided. Do not feed the bears under any circumstances.
  • There's a steep road leading down to the lake from the parking area. In summer, there is often a minibus service for a small fee if you don't want to walk back up.
  • Combine your visit with a tour of the nearby Tinovul Mohoș, a unique peat bog of volcanic origin. Access is only permitted with a guide. Tours start regularly from near the lake's parking area.

🍽 Food

🍽
Kürtőskalács (Chimney Cake)

Look for the wooden stalls in the parking area above the lake. It's often made fresh over charcoal and is the well-suited snack.

🍽
Lángos

Another popular street food snack, often sold alongside Kürtőskalács. This deep-fried dough is typically topped with garlic, sour cream, and cheese.

🍽
Local Craft Beer

While not sold at the lake itself, look for the regionally produced Csíki Sör (or its variations) in restaurants and shops in nearby towns like Băile Tușnad.

🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots

🛍
Szekler Souvenirs

The stalls near the parking lot sell small wood carvings, textiles, and other traditional Szekler crafts.

🛍
Local Honey and Jam

Local producers often sell honey, forest berry jam, and syrups. A great way to take home the local flavors.

🧘
The Lakeside Path

The path around the lake is the best place to enjoy the silence, especially as you get further away from the main boat dock area.

🧘
Tinovul Mohoș (Mohoș Peat Bog)

The wooden boardwalks take you through another world, with carnivorous plants and a unique, silent atmosphere. Access is with a guide only, which preserves the tranquility.

🧘
Viewpoint from the Road

Before you turn off for the parking area, there are viewpoints along the main road where you can get a quiet look at the lake positioned in its volcanic crater.

Saint Anne Lake is a unique natural phenomenon in Central and Eastern Europe, being the only volcanic lake formed within a perfectly preserved crater. Located at an altitude of 948 meters in the Ciomadul Mountains, the lake has no springs and is fed solely by rainfall, resulting in water purity nearly equal to distilled water. The circular lake is surrounded by steep crater walls and dense pine forests, creating a mystical and serene atmosphere throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk around the lake's shore or rent rowboats for a scenic trip on the water. Nearby lies the Mohos Peat Bog, a protected natural area home to rare glacial-era plants, accessible only with a professional guide. The Saint Anne Chapel on the shore is an important pilgrimage site for the local community. Due to the high bear population in the area, visitors must strictly follow safety guidelines and remain in designated zones. The site is best reached by car from the direction of Sfântu Gheorghe or Miercurea Ciuc. Summer is the peak season for hiking and picnicking, while winter features a quiet, snowy landscape where the lake often freezes solid. For a local culinary treat, try the traditional chimney cake (kürtőskalács) sold by vendors near the parking area, a staple of the region's Szekler heritage.
