💡 Tips
- Be cautious of bears, especially in the evening. Observe them only from a safe distance.
- Visit Saint Anne Lake, a volcanic crater lake, ideally in the early morning to avoid the crowds and midday heat. Check about the road fee to access the lake.
- Drink water from the local mineral springs (izvoare/borviz). Each spring has a unique taste and mineral composition, and they are free to use.
- The town is very small and almost everything is within walking distance. A stroll around Ciucaș Lake in the center is very relaxing.
🍽 Food
Try this sweet pastry baked over charcoal. You'll find it at stalls in the town center and near tourist spots.
Enjoy freshly grilled or fried trout, often sourced from local fish farms. Look for restaurants specializing in fish dishes.
A hearty stew, typical of the region. First-rate after a hike in the mountains.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Look for small markets or stalls selling local honey, homemade jams, and syrups made from forest berries.
In the souvenir shops, you can find hand-carved wooden items and other traditional Szekler handicrafts.
A quiet walk along the bank of the Olt river, which flows through the town, is a great way to relax.
Rent a paddle boat or just relax on the shore of the small lake in the town center.
A short hike up to the ruins of the Apor Bastion above the town gives a nice view and a quiet spot.
Water temperature…
Băile Tușnad, often called the 'Pearl of Transylvania,' is set in a scenic gorge of the Olt River, surrounded by the volcanic peaks of the Carpathians. It holds the title of Romania's smallest city, yet it is a major health resort specialized in cardiovascular treatments thanks to its carbonated mineral waters. The air here is exceptionally pure and rich in ozone. The primary draw for visitors is Saint Anne Lake, the only volcanic crater lake in Central and Eastern Europe, located just a short drive away. Within the town, guests can enjoy a modern wellness center or hike to panoramic viewpoints like the Falcon's Rock. The area is also famous for its dense population of brown bears, with professional bear-watching hides available for safe sightings. Szekler hospitality and local treats like Kürtőskalács (chimney cake) add to the charm. The city is easily accessible by train or car from Brasov or Miercurea Ciuc. Summer is well-suited for hiking, while winter gives great spa experiences and local skiing.
