Harghita Mountains (Romania)

Weather…

The Harghita Mountains (Munții Harghita) are the longest and youngest volcanic range in the Romanian Carpathians, stretching approximately 70 kilometers from north to south. They are part of the inner volcanic arc of the Eastern Carpathians, formed by massive eruptions during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs. The range is divided into three main sections: North Harghita, Central Harghita, and South Harghita, with Madarasi-Hargita being the highest peak at 1801 meters. The topography features numerous well-preserved volcanic cones, vast lava plateaus, and deep valleys. One of the most famous landmarks is Saint Anne Lake, the only volcanic crater lake in Romania, located in the southernmost part of the range. The area is renowned for its post-volcanic phenomena, such as mineral springs and mofettas (carbon dioxide vents), which are used for health treatments. These mountains are covered with extensive forests, providing critical habitat for large carnivores like brown bears and wolves. Culturally, the range is deeply significant to the Szekler people and serves as a major hub for hiking and winter sports in Transylvania.
