Madarasi-Hargita Peak (Romania)

Weather…

Madarasi-Hargita (Vârful Madarasi-Hargita) is the highest peak of the Harghita Mountains, reaching an elevation of 1801 meters. Known as the 'Holy Mountain of the Szeklers', it holds immense cultural and spiritual significance for the local population. Geologically, the peak is a remnant of a massive Pliocene stratovolcano, composed primarily of andesitic lava flows and volcanic breccias. The summit provides one of the most expansive panoramic views in Romania, stretching across the Transylvanian Basin to the high ridges of the Făgăraș and Rodna mountains. The top is decorated with numerous traditional wooden carvings and crosses left by visitors, reflecting its role as a place of pilgrimage. Today, it is a premier destination for mountain tourism, featuring several ski resorts and well-marked hiking trails, mostly accessed from the village of Izvoare. The subalpine ecosystem at the top includes juniper thickets and rare mountain wildflowers. Due to its high altitude, the area experiences long, snowy winters, making it a reliable destination for winter sports from December through April.
