East-West / West-East (Qatar)

Weather…

“East-West / West-East” is a monumental public art installation by the world-renowned American sculptor Richard Serra, located in the Brouq Nature Reserve in western Qatar. Completed in 2014, the work consists of four massive steel plates, each standing over 14 meters tall, spans over a kilometer through the desert landscape. The plates are positioned with extreme precision so that they maintain a well-suited horizontal alignment with each other despite the undulating topography of the terrain. The Cor-Ten steel used for the sculptures is designed to oxidize over time, developing a deep brown and reddish patina that blends naturally with the desert's earthy tones. This artwork explores the relationship between human scale and the vastness of nature, while emphasizing the isolation of the desert environment. Reaching the site requires a journey through rugged off-road terrain, making the visit a unique pilgrimage for art enthusiasts. It is regarded as one of the most significant examples of land art in the 21st century, commissioned by the Qatar Museums Authority.
