The Al Karaana Lagoons, located about 60 kilometers southwest of Doha, are a remarkable example of transforming an industrial site into a thriving wetland reserve. Originally ponds for treated sewage effluent, the site was rehabilitated by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) and converted into an artificial wetland featuring three large lagoons. Today, the lagoons are a haven for wildlife, attracting over 200 species of birds, including migratory and resident species. The clean, treated water supports a rich aquatic flora and fauna, making the area a significant spot for biodiversity in the region. Pathways and observation points have been created for visitors to enjoy the birdlife and scenery, making the project a successful model of ecological remediation and conservation.

Getting there
The rehabilitated wetlands are typically best reached by private vehicle from Doha, driving southwest along the main highways before turning onto unpaved local dirt roads leading to the bird sanctuary.
Best season
The most comfortable time for a visit is during the cooler winter months, from November to March, when the temperatures are handy for walking and migratory birds are typically most active in this area.
Terrain & paths
Visitors will find mostly flat and easily accessible dirt paths surrounding the water basins, though some areas may occasionally become slippery or muddy following the rare and brief winter rain showers.
What to bring
Binoculars for bird watching, a camera with a good telephoto lens, plenty of drinking water, and reliable sun protection are highly recommended, as there is practically no natural shade along the banks.
Parking
Informal, unpaved parking areas can usually be found near the main entrance to the reserve, where you can safely leave your vehicle before continuing to explore the wetland environments on foot.
Safety
Stick strictly to the marked paths to avoid disturbing the fragile ecosystem, watch out for soft mud near the water's edge, and do not underestimate the strong midday sun, even during the winter months.
Time needed
A typical visit lasts around two to three hours, which provides ample time to stroll along the banks, quietly observe the diverse birdlife, and fully enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this unique environment.
