Mogadouro is located on the Planalto Mirandês in the Bragança district and looks back on a long history closely linked to the Knightly Orders of the Templars and of Christ. The castle of Mogadouro, whose ruins still dominate the townscape today, was a strategic point in the 12th century during the Christian Reconquista. Later, the town was closely tied to the fate of the Távora family, leading to a temporary decline in the 18th century following the Távora affair. Today's town is a center for ecotourism and benefits from its location between the Douro International Park and the Azibo region. The landscape is characterized by cork oak forests and granite formations. Culturally, Mogadouro is known for its winter mask traditions, particularly the 'Chocalheiro', which are part of the rich ethnographic heritage of Trás-os-Montes. Agriculture, especially grain production and livestock farming, continues to play a central role.
