Ponte de Lima is officially recognized as the oldest town in Portugal, located in the heart of the Minho region on the banks of the Lima River. It derives its name from the prominent bridge, whose origins date back to the Roman era and which was later expanded in the Middle Ages. The town received its municipal charter in 1125 from Countess Theresa, the mother of the first Portuguese king, even before the nation achieved full independence. Ponte de Lima is famous for its medieval architecture, manor houses, and blooming gardens, hosting an international garden festival every year. Historically, it served as a vital junction on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Local culture is deeply rooted in the traditional "Feiras Novas" festival and the production of regional Vinho Verde wine. Today, the town draws visitors with its blend of ancient history, rich gastronomy, and the easy on the eye landscape of Northern Portugal.
