Serra do Alturas is a minor mountain range in northeastern Portugal, near the Spanish border. It reaches approximately 950 meters in elevation and is composed mainly of slate and quartzite. Vegetation is sparse, with scrubland and some pine forests. The area is thinly populated; agriculture focuses on sheep farming and olive cultivation. The climate is Mediterranean with continental influences, featuring hot summers and cold winters. The range is part of the Douro International Nature Park. Historically, it served as a border fortification; ruins of medieval castles remain. The name 'Alturas' means 'heights,' reflecting its exposed position. Several streams originate in the valleys, flowing into the Douro River. The region is popular with hikers seeking solitude and expansive views.
