Vila do Conde is a historic city located at the mouth of the Ave River, boasting a rich heritage that dates back to pre-Roman times. The city flourished during the Age of Discovery, as its shipyards produced many of the vessels used in Portuguese maritime expeditions across the globe. Dominating the skyline is the Monastery of Santa Clara, founded in 1318, an architectural masterpiece that combines Gothic and Baroque elements. Another major landmark is the Santa Clara Aqueduct, which originally consisted of 999 arches and stretched for several kilometers to supply water to the convent. Vila do Conde is nationally and internationally famous for its intricate bobbin lace (Rendas de Bilros), a traditional craft still practiced by local artisans. A full-scale replica of a 16th-century ship, the Nau Quinhentista, is moored at the riverfront and serves as a floating museum of maritime life. The city successfully balances its deep historical roots with a spirited modern economy focused on tourism and textiles.
