Torre de Moncorvo Castle (Portugal)

Weather…

The Castle of Torre de Moncorvo is a significant medieval fortification located in the Trás-os-Montes region of northeast Portugal. Its construction was mandated by King D. Dinis in 1285, following the granting of a royal charter to the town to bolster the defense of the frontier against Castile. Throughout the Middle Ages, the castle was a key strategic point, undergoing significant upgrades during the reign of King Manuel I in the early 16th century to accommodate early gunpowder weaponry. While much of the original structure has been lost over time, the surviving curtain walls and foundations remain integrated into the town's historical center. These ruins serve as a reminder of the settlement's military importance in the Douro Superior region and provide insight into the architectural evolution of Portuguese border fortresses across different dynasties.
