Arcos de Valdevez is an appealing town in Northern Portugal, situated on the banks of the Vez River and often called the gateway to the Peneda-Gerês National Park. The town is most famous for the historic "Recontro de Valdevez," a knightly tournament in 1141 that averted a civil war between the forces of Afonso Henriques and his cousin Alfonso VII of Castile. This event was instrumental in the consolidation of Portuguese independence. The townscape is defined by Baroque manor houses, medieval bridges, and the impressive Paço de Giela, a fortified noble house of great historical significance. A refreshing ride through the rain along the Vez. We start well-equipped by the river and pedal hard to Giela. At noon, we dry our clothes in a bike-friendly cafe. In the afternoon, we explore the bridges and churches, maneuvering extra carefully on the wet pavement.
Winter cycling in the Minho Valley offers clear views and cool breezes. We cycle up to Giela in the morning, where the cold air fills our lungs. After a warming lunch, we explore the city center. The low afternoon sun casts long shadows on the old bridges before we finish our tour just in time before the evening cold.
