Leskowiec Peak (Poland)

Weather…

Leskowiec is one of the most famous and frequently visited peaks in the Little Beskids (Beskid Mały) of southern Poland. Standing at 922 meters above sea level, it is located in the eastern part of the range and, together with the neighboring Groń Jana Pawła II, forms a key tourist hub. The summit's relief is gently rounded, a typical feature of the erosion-shaped sandstone formations characteristic of the Beskids. The vast mountain meadows at the top offer an impressive panoramic view that, on clear days, extends from Babia Góra to the high peaks of the Tatra Mountains. The peak holds significant historical value as it was a favorite hiking destination for Karol Wojtyła, the future Pope John Paul II, during his youth. A mountain shelter built in 1932 just below the summit remains a popular base for hikers to this day. The surrounding area is covered with dense beech forests, which display extraordinary colors during the autumn season.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to Leskowiec Peak is typically gained from the surrounding villages in the Little Beskids, where multiple marked trails begin. Many hikers start their ascent from nearby mountain passes that provide convenient access to the main ridges.
📅
Best season
The warmest months from late spring to early autumn present the best conditions for clear panoramic views from the summit. Winter climbs are possible but usually demand specialized experience due to snowy tracks and potentially harsh winds.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The hike involves steep sections and sustained ascents through forested slopes before reaching the exposed summit area. Trails range from packed dirt under the tree canopy to rocky and uneven ground near the peak.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality hiking footwear with good grip is essential for safely navigating the steep ascents and descents. A windproof outer layer should always be packed, as conditions on the exposed peak can be significantly colder than in the valleys.
🅿️
Parking
Designated parking spots can usually be found at the major trailheads located in the surrounding valley communities. Arriving early on weekends is recommended, as these parking areas often fill up quickly with local day-trippers.
⚠️
Safety
Pay close attention to trail markers, as intersecting routes in the forested sections can occasionally be confusing. Visibility on the peak drops rapidly during sudden cloud cover, so carrying an offline map and a fully charged phone is advised.
⏱️
Time needed
A standard hike to the peak and back usually takes between four to six hours, depending on the chosen route and resting pace. Allowing extra time to admire the extensive mountain views from the summit is a common practice among visitors.
