Babia Góra National Park (Poland)

Weather…

The Babia Góra National Park lies on Poland's southern border with Slovakia, protecting the highest massif of the Western Beskids. The park dominates the landscape with its imposing Diablak (Devil's Peak), a summit notorious for its extremely harsh, unpredictable weather conditions and often shrouded in thick clouds. This mountainous region is ecologically outstanding because it provides an almost textbook example of the vertical zonation of alpine flora: starting from deep mountain forests in the valleys, moving up through dense, primeval Carpathian beech forests and a belt of dwarf mountain pine, to reach a pure, high-alpine steppe and rocky landscape at the summit. Due to these exceptionally undisturbed and clearly demarcated zones, the park was designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. The pristine nature attracts botanists who come to study rare Ice Age relict plants, as well as hikers seeking the legendary sunrise from the peak.

📅
Best season
The best time for wildlife observation is late spring to early autumn, from May to September. During this period, most bird species are active and mammals are often seen on mountain meadows.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and dusk offer the best chances to spot shy animals like chamois or golden eagles. During midday heat, many species retreat to shaded areas.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on marked trails to avoid disturbing fragile vegetation. Feeding animals is strictly prohibited as it alters their natural behavior and can make them ill.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with at least 8x magnification are essential for viewing animals from a safe distance. Hiking boots with good grip and weatherproof clothing are recommended for changeable mountain conditions.
🧭
Getting there
The park is accessible from the towns of Zawoja or Zawoja via the main road. From there, marked hiking trails and a cable car lead to the Babia Góra summit.
🦌
What to expect
Mountain wildlife is shy and not always visible; plan for several hours of observation. Patience and quiet behavior often reward you with unforgettable encounters.
