Founded in 1277, the town has a rich history reflected in its well-preserved medieval town center. The central Market Square (Rynek) is surrounded by colorful historic houses and the neoclassical town hall facade. One of the town's most important figures is Saint John Cantius, a 15th-century theology professor who was born here. A Baroque church is dedicated to him, serving as an important pilgrimage site.
