Little Beskids (Poland)

Weather…

The Little Beskids (Beskid Mały) are a mountain range in the Western Beskids in southern Poland, divided into two parts by the Soła River valley. The highest point is Mount Czupel, reaching an elevation of 933 meters above sea level. Despite their name, the Little Beskids feature steep slopes and deeply carved valleys, making them a popular destination for hikers and skiers. A significant geological feature is the Soła River gorge, where three reservoirs, Tresna, Porąbka, and Czaniec, were constructed for power generation and water management. The slopes are predominantly covered with beech and spruce forests, providing a habitat for numerous rare plant species. Several small caves can be found in the regional rock formations, including the Komoniecki Cave, which is protected as a natural monument. Their proximity to the cities of Bielsko-Biała and Andrychów makes the mountains an easily accessible recreational area for the regional population, offering views extending toward the Silesian Basin and the High Tatras.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This mountain group can typically be accessed from towns located in the surrounding Soła and Skawa river valleys. Public transportation links these valley communities to larger regional cities, making it relatively straightforward to reach the trailheads.
📅
Best season
Spring through autumn is generally the most pleasant time to explore this Outer Western Carpathian region. While the trails are open year-round, deep winter snow at higher elevations like Czupel can obscure paths and increase physical demands.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape features a mix of deeply forested slopes and moderately steep ascents up to ridges that reach around 900 meters. The walking paths are largely dirt trails, interspersed with roots and occasional rocky sections requiring surefootedness.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable hiking shoes with rugged outsoles will help you manage the uneven terrain across the mountain group. Carrying a reliable daypack with sufficient water, high-energy snacks, and emergency rain gear is generally recommended for all routes.
🅿️
Parking
Roadside parking and designated dirt lots are usually situated near the entrances of major hiking valleys. Since some areas are remote, it is a sensible strategy to park securely at recognized trailheads or local tourist hubs before starting out.
⚠️
Safety
Navigation can occasionally become tricky where logging operations have altered the appearance of traditional forest trails. Visitors should be mindful of early sunsets in the deep valleys, particularly during the shoulder seasons, to avoid hiking in the dark.
⏱️
Time needed
Exploring the distinct peaks and valleys of this compact region typically requires dedicating at least half a day per specific trail. Enthusiasts aiming to traverse multiple ridges might plan for several consecutive days of hiking.
