Biskupin Archaeological Museum (Poland)

Weather…

The Biskupin Archaeological Museum is home to a world-famous life-size reconstruction of a fortified settlement belonging to the Lusatian culture, dating from the Early Iron Age (c. 750-400 BC). The site was discovered by chance in 1933 by a local teacher after water levels in Lake Biskupin receded, revealing remarkably preserved wooden stakes. The original settlement was built on a marshy island and was surrounded by a massive wooden-and-earth rampart and a breakwater to protect against erosion. Inside the walls, roughly 100 identical timber houses were arranged along eleven parallel streets, accommodating a population of up to 1,000 people. The excavations at Biskupin are a milestone in European archaeology, as the boggy soil preserved organic materials that would otherwise have perished. Today, visitors can walk through reconstructed gatehouses, streets, and furnished interiors. The museum hosts an annual Archaeological Festival, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, featuring ancient crafts and combat displays. Biskupin is often referred to as the 'Polish Pompeii' due to its exceptional level of preservation and historical clarity.
