Bear Cave (Poland)

Weather…

The Bear Cave near Kletno in the Śnieżnik Massif is easily one of the absolutely longest and most immensely spectacular underground cave systems in all of Poland, with its complete, overall extent still not being fully completely explored to this day. The cave specifically owes its highly evocative name to the massive, unprecedented discoveries of exceptionally preserved bones and skulls of the deeply prehistoric cave bear (Ursus spelaeus), which went totally extinct during the intense Ice Age, and which were remarkably found here alongside the fossilized remains of ancient cave lions and hyenas. The incredibly expansive cave, which intricately stretches across three highly distinct levels, profoundly fascinates visitors with its incredibly rich and completely remarkably intact dripstone formations: in the carefully illuminated halls, visitors can wonderfully admire utterly gigantic stalactites, incredibly massive stalagmites, highly delicate sinter flags, and brilliantly luminous white limestone formations that have slowly, continuously grown over thousands of years due to the relentless seepage of calcium-rich water. To most effectively critically protect this profoundly sensitive underground ecosystem with its deeply constant microclimate, public access is extremely strictly heavily limited and is solely permitted strictly in notably small groups closely accompanied by professional cave guides.
