Weather…

Králický Sněžník is, at 1,424 meters, the highest peak of the mountain range of the same name, on the border between the Czech Republic and Poland. This massive mountain is an important European watershed, as the Morava River, which flows into the Black Sea, rises on its slopes, while other streams flow into the North and Baltic Seas. The area has been declared a National Nature Reserve to protect its unique subalpine vegetation, peat bogs and rock formations. In the past, a stone lookout tower stood on the summit, but it was demolished in 1973; today there is a new tower on the Polish side. A well-known rock formation near the source of the Morava is the Elephant statue. Králický Sněžník is a popular destination for hikers who appreciate the rugged beauty, the wide views and the untouched nature. In winter, the region is convenient for ski touring and snowshoeing.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Hikers usually begin their ascent from the Moravian villages of Dolní Morava or Stříbrnice. The approach is exclusively on foot via long, continuously rising trails leading towards the mountainous border.
📅
Best season
Summer generally provides the most stable conditions for safely reaching the summit and viewing the symbolic elephant statue. Deep snow usually covers the peak from late autumn until well into the spring months.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is rugged, characterized by steep forest climbs that eventually open into wide, wind-swept alpine meadows. The final push to the summit is generally very rocky and completely exposed to the weather.
🎒
What to bring
Solid, supportive hiking boots and layered, wind-resistant clothing are highly recommended regardless of the season. Visitors should typically carry their own water and provisions, as summit facilities are non-existent.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors typically park at the designated paid lots near the ski resorts in Dolní Morava before commencing their hike. These areas are quite expansive but can still fill up completely on clear, sunny weekends.
⚠️
Safety
Navigation can become exceptionally difficult during typical sudden fogs that routinely shroud the bare peak. Hikers must carefully follow the border markers and avoid wandering off the designated path.
⏱️
Time needed
A complete round trip from the valley floor to the summit and back generally demands a solid six to eight hours of effort. It is traditionally viewed as a challenging full-day hike requiring good physical stamina.
