Hruby Jesenik (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The High Jeseník (Hrubý Jeseník) is the second highest mountain range in the Czech Republic, located in the northeast of the country on the border between Moravia and Silesia. The highest peak is Praděd at 1,491 meters, featuring a prominent television tower on its summit. The region is known for its rugged nature, deep forests, and significant spa towns like Karlova Studánka, valued for its clean air. Geologically, the massif consists mainly of crystalline schists and gneisses formed during the Variscan orogeny. A technical highlight of the region is the Dlouhé stráně pumped-storage plant, considered one of the seven wonders of the Czech Republic. The mountains have been protected as a Landscape Protected Area (CHKO Jeseníky) since 1969 to preserve unique alpine ecosystems and peat bogs. In winter, Hrubý Jeseník is a major ski center, while in summer it attracts hikers and cyclists.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access is generally facilitated by several mountain passes and starting towns such as Karlova Studánka or Kouty nad Desnou. Cable cars and shuttle buses frequently operate to transport visitors closer to the main ridges.
📅
Best season
Summer is typically the main season for extensive hiking and exploring the high peat bogs. The winter months transform the range into a highly popular destination for cross-country and downhill skiing enthusiasts.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The trails range from broad, paved paths near the main summits to challenging, rocky ascents through deep forests. The alpine meadows above the tree line can typically be quite exposed to strong mountain winds.
🎒
What to bring
Durable hiking boots and windproof layering are generally essential, as weather at higher altitudes changes rapidly. In winter, specialized snow gear or skis are naturally required to navigate the deeper snowpacks safely.
🅿️
Parking
Large parking facilities are typically available at the bottom stations of the ski lifts and in major gateway villages. These spots often require a daily fee and tend to reach full capacity very early on sunny weekends.
⚠️
Safety
It is strictly recommended to stay on marked trails to protect the fragile alpine tundra ecosystems. Fog and sudden storms are common hazards, so visitors should always check the mountain rescue service updates beforehand.
⏱️
Time needed
A basic hike to one of the main viewpoints generally takes about four to six hours. Traversing the main ridge between the peaks typically requires a full day of demanding walking and careful pacing.
