Tumbes Mangroves Sanctuary (Peru)

Weather…

The Manglares de Tumbes National Sanctuary, located on the far northern coast of Peru, protects the country's most significant mangrove ecosystem. This unique environment, where fresh river water meets the salt water of the Pacific, is a labyrinth of tidal channels and tangled roots that serve as a vital nursery for marine life. It is famous for its 'Black Scallops' (conchas negras) and the formidable American crocodile, which finds one of its last remaining habitats in Peru here. The sanctuary is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 140 species of birds, including the rare mangrove warbler. Navigating its calm waters by boat has a serene journey through a world of emerald green, where the life of the sea and the forest are inextricably linked.

📅
Best season
The dry season from May to October is best, as mangroves are more accessible and crocodiles bask. In the rainy season, water levels rise and visibility decreases.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning is good for watching crocodiles basking on the banks. Late afternoon sees birds become more active as the heat subsides.
📜
Etiquette
Always maintain a safe distance from crocodiles, which can be dangerous. Do not enter restricted areas and never feed the animals.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are useful for watching crocodiles and birds from a safe distance. Sun protection, a hat, and waterproof shoes are recommended due to the wet environment.
🧭
Getting there
The sanctuary lies about 30 km south of Tumbes on Peru's north coast. It can be reached by car on the Panamericana highway or by boat from a nearby port.
🦌
What to expect
Crocodiles are often hard to spot as they camouflage in mud or water. Patience and quiet behaviour are key to glimpsing these shy reptiles.
