Tumbes
Tumbes is the capital of the region and a key hub in northern Peru. While the city features a lively Plaza de Armas, it is primarily known as the starting point for natural wonders. The nearby National Sanctuary of the Mangroves of Tumbes gives boat tours through winding waterways where rare birds and crocodiles can be spotted. The region's culinary scene is world-renowned for its bold seafood flavors. Beyond nature, Tumbes has an interesting blend of border commerce and colonial history. The beaches of Puerto Pizarro are well-suited for excursions to Bird Island. Access is convenient via the local airport, Cap. FAP Pedro Canga Rodríguez. As it is a tropical region, rains are more frequent between January and March, making the dry season from May to November the recommended time for outdoor adventures.
