💡 Tips
- To see the best Panama hats being woven, ask to visit the small workshops behind the main storefronts along the central streets.
- Visit the Ciudad Alfaro complex on the hill; it has free entry, great museums, and panoramic views of the coast.
- Bring sun protection as the climb up the hill to the mausoleum can be quite exposed to the harsh equatorial sun.
- Bargaining for hats is expected, but remember that the finest grades take months to weave and are genuinely valuable.

Montecristi is an historically profound city in the Manabí Province, tucked away at the base of the hill that shares its name. Founded in 1628 by settlers fleeing pirate attacks in Manta, the city is most renowned as the birthplace of Eloy Alfaro, the leader of the Liberal Revolution and a former president of Ecuador. Montecristi is globally celebrated for the production of the finest Toquilla straw hats, often misidentified as Panama hats, which are recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Geographically, the area features a mix of arid coastal landscapes and the more humid slopes of the Montecristi Hill. In 2008, the city regained national political prominence as the seat of the Constituent Assembly that drafted Ecuador's current constitution. Today, Montecristi serves as a key center for traditional craftsmanship and cultural tourism, with the Ciudad Alfaro complex preserving the nation's revolutionary heritage.
