Repatriación, a town in the Caaguazú Department of eastern Paraguay, lies about 200 kilometres east of Asunción in an agriculturally shaped region. It was founded in 1942 to repatriate Paraguayan emigrants from Argentina, hence the name Repatriación, meaning return home. During the twentieth century German, Japanese and Brazilian immigrants also settled in the region, making Repatriación a multicultural community. With around 30 000 inhabitants the town is today an important agricultural centre. Economically Repatriación relies on soybean, maize, wheat and yerba mate cultivation, cattle ranching and dairy farming. The town is home to several large cooperatives, a significant Japanese colony with soybean-oil production facilities and a lively cultural scene with German and Japanese festivals. Notable sights include the Catholic parish church, the Japanese Buddhist pagoda and the local history museum with mementos of the first Paraguayan returnees from Argentina.
