Capiibary, a town in the San Pedro Department in north-central Paraguay, lies about 240 kilometres north-east of Asunción in an agriculturally shaped region. It was founded in 1973 and developed rapidly thanks to the state colonisation policy that directed Brazilian immigrants into the Atlantic Forest area. The name comes from Guaraní and means roughly capybara place, Capiibary refers to the capybaras, the largest rodents in the world, that inhabit the surrounding wetlands. With around 35 000 inhabitants the town is today an important soybean-production centre. Economically Capiibary relies on soybean, maize and wheat farming, cattle ranching and forestry. Several cooperatives and soybean mills form the backbone of the local economy. Notable sights include the modern parish church, the Mercado Municipal and the surrounding wetlands with their rich wildlife of capybaras, caimans and tropical birds, attracting nature lovers and ecotourists alike.
