Curuguaty, a town in the Canindeyú Department of north-eastern Paraguay, lies about 250 kilometres east of Asunción in a hilly landscape dominated by soybean farming and cattle ranching. It was founded in 1715 and is among the oldest towns in the region; during the dictatorship of José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia in the early nineteenth century Curuguaty was briefly declared the provincial capital. Today the town has around 65 000 inhabitants. The name comes from Guaraní and means roughly the place of curu trees. Economically it relies on soybean and maize farming, cattle ranching and forestry, since the region is one of the country's most important soybean-producing zones. Curuguaty gained international notoriety in 2012 through the tragic Curuguaty massacre, a land-conflict incident that triggered the impeachment of President Fernando Lugo. Highlights include the historic parish church, the Mercado Municipal and the annual Festival del Maní, the peanut festival celebrating one of the region's traditional crops.
