Caaguazú, a city in the Caaguazú Department of eastern Paraguay, lies about 180 kilometres east of Asunción along Route 2 and is one of the most important economic cities of eastern Paraguay. It was founded in 1733 and is one of the oldest cities in the region. The name comes from Guaraní and means the great forest, referring to the former Atlantic Forest that covered the region before colonisation. Today the city has around 110 000 inhabitants, making it one of the most populous in the department. Economically Caaguazú relies on soybean, maize and wheat farming, cattle ranching, timber processing and trade. The city hosts several large mills, sawmills and cooperatives. It is also an important educational hub with the National University of Caaguazú and several technical colleges. Notable sights include the historic parish church, the Mercado Municipal and the annual departmental festival featuring folkloric performances that bring the region's traditions to life.
