💡 Tips

  • Since the town has a strong German influence, don't be surprised if you can use German alongside Spanish here.
  • It's the first-rate base for exploring the Ybytyruzú Mountains; start your hikes early to avoid the midday heat.
  • Public transport is scarce, so having a rental car is highly recommended for exploring the surrounding vineyards.
  • Try the locally produced wines and craft beers, which reflect the European immigrant heritage.
  • Carry cash (Guaraníes) as many rural spots and small vendors do not accept cards.

Independencia, a small town in the Guairá Department of central Paraguay, lies at the foot of Mount Ybytyruzú, the highest peak in the region, and is widely known as the Paraguayan Little Bavaria. The town was founded in 1919 by German immigrants who settled here after the First World War to establish agricultural colonies. German culture still shapes the cityscape today: German bakeries, breweries and ham factories operate here, along with an annual Oktoberfest and beer festival that draw tourists from across the country. With around 20 000 inhabitants Independencia is a popular destination, especially for hikers and nature lovers, as the surrounding Sierra de Ybytyruzú is a protected area with waterfalls, forests and hiking trails. Economically the town relies on viticulture, cheese production, fruit farming, agriculture and ecotourism. Several wineries offer tastings of typical German-Paraguayan wines and accommodation on estancias.
