San Estanislao, popularly known simply as Santaní, is a city in the San Pedro Department in north-central Paraguay. It lies about 170 kilometres north-east of Asunción along a major route toward Concepción and Pedro Juan Caballero. The settlement was founded in 1749 by Jesuit missionaries as the reduction of San Estanislao, named after the Polish saint Stanislaus Kostka. Until the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spanish America in 1768 the town was an important religious and economic centre. During the War of the Triple Alliance Marshal Francisco Solano López temporarily used a local Jesuit building as his headquarters. Today Santaní has around 70 000 inhabitants and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the region. Economically it relies on cattle ranching, soybean farming, sesame production and lively commerce. Highlights include the historic parish church, Plaza Mariscal López and the annual patronal feast on 13 November, which draws visitors from all over the region.
