Choré, a town in the San Pedro Department in north-central Paraguay, lies about 220 kilometres north-east of Asunción in an agriculturally shaped region. It was recognised as an independent municipality in 1982 after having been a small village for decades. The name comes from Guaraní and means roughly soaked or wet, alluding to the many streams and wetlands of the region. With around 35 000 inhabitants Choré is a typical agricultural centre of the region. Economically the town relies on soybean and maize farming, sesame production (Paraguay is one of the world's largest sesame producers), cattle ranching and vegetable-oil production. Several cooperatives and soybean and sesame processing facilities operate here. Choré is an important supply point for the surrounding rural population and hosts several schools, a hospital and a modern parish church. Notable sights include the Mercado Municipal and the annual patronal feast with folklore and parade.
