Manchar Lake (Pakistan)

Weather…

Manchar Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in Pakistan and one of the largest in South Asia. Located west of the Indus River in the Sindh province, its surface area fluctuates significantly based on the season and rainfall, ranging from 250 to over 500 square kilometers. The lake is fed by hill torrents from the Kirthar Mountains and by canals connecting it to the Indus. Historically, the area has been inhabited for millennia; the indigenous Mohana fishing community, many of whom live on floating boathouses, maintain a lifestyle that traces back to the Indus Valley Civilization. In recent decades, however, the lake has suffered from severe environmental degradation, particularly due to the discharge of saline agricultural runoff via the Main Nara Valley Drain, which has impacted fish stocks. Despite these challenges, Manchar Lake remains a critical wetland for migratory birds and a central feature of the regional water system. Efforts to rehabilitate the lake are vital for the survival of local cultures and the area's biodiversity.
