Senja Island (Norway)

Weather…

Senja, Norway's second-largest island, is often referred to as 'Norway in miniature' because it encompasses nearly all the country's diverse landscapes within a small area. While the western coast is defined by rugged mountain ranges rising vertically from the Atlantic, such as the iconic Segla, the eastern side features gentler hills and birch forests. Geologically, the island consists predominantly of granite and gneiss, representing some of the oldest rock formations in Scandinavia. Located north of the Arctic Circle, Senja features spectacular natural phenomena like the midnight sun in summer and the northern lights in winter. The Ånderdalen National Park in the south protects pristine old-growth forests and moorlands that have remained unchanged for centuries. Historically, Senja's inhabitants relied primarily on fishing, a heritage visible in pretty villages like Hamn and Husøy. Today, the island is a quiet find for hikers and photographers seeking the raw, authentic beauty of the Arctic wilderness.
