💡 Tips
- Whale watching is the main draw here; book your safari weeks in advance during the summer season as boats sell out quickly.
- The ocean swells can be rough on the safaris. Buy motion sickness pills at the local pharmacy before boarding.
- Take the guided tour up the Andenes Lighthouse for the best panoramic view of the town and the vast ocean.
- The weather can be extremely windy; an umbrella is useless, rely on a good quality waterproof windbreaker.
- This is the start of the National Scenic Route Andøya; fill up your gas tank here before heading south along the rugged coast.

Andenes is situated at the northern tip of the island of Andøya in the Vesterålen archipelago and serves as the administrative center of Andøy Municipality in Nordland County. The town is globally renowned as a premier whale-watching destination because the deep Bleiksdjupet canyon lies very close to the coast, attracting sperm whales year-round. Historically, Andenes was a significant fishing hub dating back to the Middle Ages and was once among the largest settlements in Northern Norway. A modern pillar of the community is the Andøya Space Center, which has launched sounding rockets for atmospheric and auroral research since 1962. The skyline is punctuated by the 40-meter-tall red lighthouse, Andenes fyr, built in 1859 to ensure maritime safety in the treacherous Arctic waters. The local geography features expansive peat bogs and dramatic mountain ranges that drop sharply into the North Atlantic. Today, the town successfully blends traditional marine industries with cutting-edge space science and sustainable Arctic tourism.
