Loen Valley, also known as Lodalen, is one of Norway's most dramatic and historic valleys. It is dominated by the turquoise Lake Lovatnet, whose color is derived from fine glacial silt (glacier milk) flowing from the surrounding arms of the Jostedalsbreen glacier. The valley's geology is defined by extremely steep walls of ancient bedrock, which have led to catastrophic rockslides in the past. In 1905 and 1936, massive rock avalanches from Mount Ramnefjell triggered tsunamis on the lake that destroyed entire settlements and claimed many lives. Despite this tragic history, the valley is now a hub for outdoor activities like climbing and hiking. The Kjenndalsbreen glacier at the end of the valley provides an impressive look at active ice dynamics. The combination of emerald waters, snow-capped peaks, and the somber memory of natural disasters gives the area a unique and powerful atmosphere.

The valley is easily accessible by car or local bus via a well-maintained road branching off from the main highway in the village of Loen. During the peak summer season, organized shuttle services frequently operate to transport tourists to the glacier arms.

The most popular time for visiting is between late May and September when the iconic Lovatnet lake shines in its vivid emerald green. Winter access is often severely restricted due to heavy snowfall and the significant risk of avalanches.

The valley floor features mostly flat, paved or packed-gravel roads running alongside the spectacular lake and river. As you approach the surrounding glaciers, the paths quickly transition into steep, rocky trails requiring surefootedness.

What to bring

Standard comfortable walking shoes are usually sufficient for exploring the valley floor and lakeside viewpoints. However, if you plan to hike closer to the glacier viewpoints, sturdy hiking boots, windproof jackets, and warm mid-layers are strongly recommended.

Designated parking lots are strategically located at the end of the valley road and near key viewpoints along the lake. These areas can become extremely crowded during summer middays, and parking fees are typically collected via automated license plate cameras.

The steep valley walls pose a constant, genuine risk of rockfalls and occasional small avalanches, even during the warmer summer months. Visitors must absolutely adhere to all warning signs and never venture beyond the established safety barriers near the glaciers.

A scenic drive with several quick photo stops along the lake usually takes around 2 to 3 hours. Those opting to hike towards the upper viewpoints or relax by the striking glacial waters typically extend their visit to a full half-day or more.
