Fjærland is located at the head of the Fjærlandsfjord, where the fjord meets the ice. The village is internationally famous as Norway's Book Town (Bokbyen), where almost every old building, from barns to post offices, is filled with second-hand books for sale. This literary charm attracts book lovers from across the globe. Equally significant is the Norwegian Glacier Museum, an award-winning building designed by Sverre Fehn, offering interactive exhibits on the Jostedalsbreen ice cap. The geographical setting is spectacular: two branches of the Jostedalsbreen glacier, Bøyabreen and Supphellebreen, are within easy reach of the village. You can admire the blue-tinted ice masses almost directly from the road. Historically, Fjærland was only accessible by boat until a tunnel was built in 1986, which helped preserve its old-world charm, epitomized by the 1891 Mundal Hotel. For active travelers, Fjærland features guided glacier hikes and kayaking on the fjord. The flat delta area at the end of the fjord is also a vital bird sanctuary. The best time to visit is from May to September, when the bookshops are open and the trails are clear of snow. Local cafes serve homemade cakes and wild game specialties, providing a cozy finish to a day of exploration.
