Egersund is the administrative town of Eigersund municipality and has one of Norway's finest natural harbors. The town has a storied history as a fishing port and commercial center, a role formalized when it was granted market town (ladested) status in 1798. Historically, Egersund is perhaps best known for the Egersund Fayancefabrik, which produced high-quality ceramics from 1847 until 1979. The architecture of the town center is defined by well-preserved wooden houses, particularly in the historic Hauen district. Today, the town serves as a vital base for the fishing industry and maritime services, with major employers including Navico and Aker Solutions. A cultural highlight is the annual Christmas Market (Julebyen), which attracts thousands of visitors. Geologically, Egersund lies within a region of anorthosite deposits, giving the landscape a stark, moon-like appearance, and it is a key site within the Magma Geopark.
