Tyholmen is the historical heart of Arendal and represents the city's golden age as one of Norway's most important maritime centers in the 18th and 19th centuries. The district is known for its magnificent wooden houses that once belonged to wealthy merchants and shipowners. A standout building is the Kallevig-gården, the current city hall, which is considered Norway's second-largest wooden building after Stiftsgården in Trondheim. It was built between 1812 and 1815 and testifies to the immense wealth that maritime trade brought to the region. The architecture on Tyholmen is a mix of Empire style and late Baroque elements, with many buildings carefully restored to preserve their original splendor. The district is characterized by canals and narrow alleys that invite strolling. The Trinity Church, with its prominent tower, forms another fixed point in Tyholmen's silhouette. Today, the area is not only a historical monument but an animated district with cafes, galleries, and cultural events.
