The old town of Kristiansand, known as Posebyen, constitutes one of Northern Europe's largest continuous collections of historic wooden houses. The name is believed to derive from the French word 'poser,' referring to the resting quarters of soldiers once billeted in the area. Posebyen consists of approximately 14 square city blocks, laid out according to the original Renaissance grid plan established by King Christian IV in 1641. Despite several major fires that devastated other parts of Kristiansand over the centuries, much of this district survived, preserving the architectural atmosphere of the 18th and 19th centuries. The characteristic white-painted wooden houses, featuring small gardens and cobblestone streets, now house galleries, cafes, and private residences. Posebyen serves as a living monument to Norwegian coastal culture, showcasing architectural transitions from humble fishermen's cottages to grand merchant residences.
