The old town of Flekkefjord, known as Hollenderbyen (The Dutch Town), is a historic district famous for its characteristic white wooden houses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The name recalls the close trade relations with the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th centuries, when Flekkefjord was an important center for the export of oak timber and fish. Many Dutch people settled here, leaving a lasting influence on local culture and architecture. The narrow, cobbled streets and well-maintained facades with flower boxes give the district a quiet, museum-like atmosphere. In recent years, Hollenderbyen has also evolved into an open-air gallery, where modern street art on historical walls creates an exciting contrast. Visitors will also find the Flekkefjord City Museum here, housed in a former merchant's house, documenting local industrial history. The preservation of this heritage makes Flekkefjord one of the best-preserved examples of Southern Norwegian coastal towns.
