The Kriva Reka Valley is located in northeastern North Macedonia, stretching from the Osogovo Mountains to its confluence with the Pčinja River. Over millennia, the river has carved a diverse landscape shaped by volcanic activity in the geological past. The area is particularly famous for the bizarre rock formations near Kratovo and the erosion pyramids of Kuklica, created by differential weathering processes. The valley is one of the most fertile regions in the country, extensively used for growing grains and fruits. Historically, the region was a significant mining center where gold, silver, and copper have been extracted since Roman antiquity. Numerous Ottoman bridges and medieval towers in the town of Kratovo testify to the valley's economic heyday. Today, the Kriva Reka Valley combines industrial tradition with agricultural importance and provides unique geological landmarks for visitors.

The valley is relatively accessible via country roads in the northeastern part of the country. The surrounding rural communities usually serve as well-suited starting points for extended hikes along the rolling green hills.

Late spring and early summer bathe the floodplains in lush green, making this time handy for visits. In autumn, the landscape displays warm colors, while the winter months are often quite chilly and noticeably damp.

The landscape is predominantly gently undulating, with extensive meadows, river floodplains, and mild ascents up the hills. The trails are mostly agricultural paths or unpaved tracks that are quite pleasant to walk on.

What to bring

Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for the occasionally damp floodplain areas. Light, breathable clothing, along with plenty of water and adequate sun protection, are essential for longer stays in the valley.

Leaving vehicles in adjacent villages or along wider dirt roads is usually possible without much trouble. Always take care to keep agricultural access routes clear and avoid obstructing any local, rural traffic.

The terrain is generally benign, though areas close to the river can become slippery or slightly flooded after heavy rainfall. Keep a safe distance from any agricultural machinery that might occasionally cross your path.

Two hours are often sufficient for a relaxing and unhurried walk through the river floodplains. However, those who wish to include the surrounding green hills in their hike can easily spend a pleasant half day in the valley.
