Clock Tower of Bitola (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Clock Tower of Bitola, known as Saat Kula, is the most distinctive landmark and a vital symbol of the city. Although a tower was mentioned at this site as early as the 16th century, the current structure in its characteristic form dates back to 1830. The tower stands approximately 33 meters tall and is built on a square foundation. A local legend claims that the Ottoman authorities collected 60,000 eggs from the citizens to strengthen the mortar for construction and enhance stability. The upper section houses the clock mechanisms and a gallery with bells that create a signature chime. The tower is located in the city park, near the Old Bazaar and Širok Sokak Street. In the 1930s, a new clock mechanism from Germany was installed, which still accurately tells time today. The Clock Tower has survived numerous wars and natural disasters, remaining an indispensable part of Bitola's skyline.
